(18th) Allison Symes

I’m Allison Symes, a multi-published flash fiction and short story writer. My short stories have been in a number of anthologies. I’ve also been privileged to be one of the fifteen winners of the Waterloo Arts Festival Writing Competition for three years in a row.

Hello, Allison Symes here!

My debut flash fiction collection, From Light to Dark and Back Again, was published in 2017 by Chapeltown Books, who are a small independent press based around the Manchester area and who do so much to give authors a voice. (Yes, I know I am bound to say that but it is true!).

I’m delighted to say my follow-up book, Tripping the Flash Fantastic, was published by Chapeltown Books in 2020.

My two flash fiction collections are available in paperback and as ebooks.

My flash fiction and short stories often appear on online magazine, CafeLit, and I am also a blogger. I write a weekly column for online community magazine, Chandler’s Ford Today, and I often write on topics of interest for writers.

For example, I’ve written about Launches in Lockdown, sharing my own experiences here but also interviewing a wide range of other writers, some of whom write for Authors Electric.

Tripping the Flash Fantastic - blurb

Allison Symes loves reading and writing quirky fiction. She discovered flash fiction thanks to a CaféLit challenge and has been hooked on the form ever since. In this follow-up to her From Light to Dark and Back Again, Allison will take you back in time, into some truly criminal minds, into fantasy worlds, and show you how motherhood looks from the viewpoint of a dragon. Enjoy the journey!

There is a mixture of stories in Tripping The Flash Fantastic from the funny to the dark. I’ve written crime flash, fantasy flash and, in my new book for the first time, I’ve shared historical flash stories. I’ve also written flash in poetic form. Despite the word count restriction, there is more flexibility than you might think with flash. Just focus on the characters. They are the be all and end all.

There are various places you can find me online from my website to my CafeLit story page to my Chandler’s Ford Today blog spot. All links below.
